Play Balloon Tower Defense

Meadow Run 20 waves 40 lives 600 starting coins No download, no sign-up

Play balloon tower defense online, free and instantly. Line the path with darts, tacks, static coils and sun lenses, and pop every balloon before it reaches the end. Twenty waves, six towers, and a wind that keeps changing its mind.

How to play

  1. Place a tower. Pick one from the tray and drop it on the grass beside the path. Towers cannot sit on the path itself, and each one shows its range while you are placing it. Corners are worth more than straights: a balloon spends roughly twice as long inside a tower's circle when the path bends through it.
  2. Start the wave. Balloons enter from the left and follow the path. Anything that reaches the far end costs you lives — one for a rubber balloon, five for a weather balloon, twenty for a Zeppelin. You begin with forty.
  3. Spend between waves. Popping balloons pays coins, and clearing a wave pays a bonus that grows every round. Upgrading an existing tower is almost always better value than building a new one, until you need a damage type you do not have yet.

That is the entire tutorial. There is no tutorial screen, no difficulty prompt and no loading bar — the first three waves teach you the controls while you play them, and you can skip the prompts at any time.

Tower Guide: all six towers, and when each one earns its coins

Every tower in Balloon Tower Defense is named after a real way to pop a balloon, so you can guess what it does before you read a word. Costs below are the build price; each tower has three levels, and the third level always unlocks a new behaviour rather than just bigger numbers.

Tower Build To level 3 Unlocks What it is for
Dart Post 100 450 Start Cheap, reliable single-target darts. Your opening move.
Tack Ring 200 900 Start Short-range burst that hits everything around it. Best on corners.
Frost Fan 300 1,350 Wave 4 Deals no damage. Creates local headwind — your counter to a bad wind phase.
Pin Cannon 350 1,575 Wave 5 Slow, heavy, and the cleanest answer to Mylar Balloons.
Static Coil 450 2,025 Wave 7 Chain lightning. Rubber loves static — clears dense packs instantly.
Sun Lens 400 1,800 Wave 9 Longest range in the game, and it reaches further the harder the wind blows.

Reading the table

Dart Post is the only tower you can afford twice on wave one, and two of them on a bend will carry you to wave six on their own. Tack Ring pays off only where the path doubles back on itself — placed on a straight it wastes most of its ring. Pin Cannon looks overpriced until wave nine, at which point it becomes the difference between clearing the wave and losing eight lives.

Frost Fan deals no damage at all, which makes players skip it. That is a mistake: it is the only tower that pushes back against the wind, and from wave sixteen onward the wind is doing more damage to your defence than the balloons are. Static Coil is the fastest way to clear a dense rubber pack, and Sun Lens has the longest reach in the game — a reach that grows as the wind picks up.

Balloon types: six materials, not six colours

Balloons here are graded by what they are actually made of. A foil balloon really is lighter and faster than a rubber one; a mylar balloon really does have a reflective film that a blunt dart skids off. Knowing the material tells you which tower to build.

Balloon HP Speed First seen Resists
Rubber Balloon 1 55 Wave 1 None
Foil Balloon 2 99 Wave 3 None
Cluster Balloon 4 45 Wave 6 None
Mylar Balloon 8 60 Wave 9 blunt ×0.5, shock ×0.6
Weather Balloon 40 32 Wave 13 shock ×0.8
Zeppelin 250 22 Wave 10 blunt ×0.6, shock ×0.75

Speed is in pixels per second before wind. A full tailwind adds up to 25% on top, scaled by how much surface the balloon presents — which is why a Zeppelin is affected far more by weather than a rubber balloon is.

Strategy: eight things that actually change the outcome

1. Build on bends, not on straights

This is the single highest-value habit in any tower defense game and it is worth more here than anywhere else, because Meadow Run is a double-S. The two tight corners early on keep balloons inside a tower's radius for about twice as long as an equivalent stretch of straight path. One Dart Post on a corner outperforms two on a straight, for half the money.

2. Upgrade before you expand

A level-2 Dart Post costs another 100 coins and nearly doubles the fire rate of a tower that is already sitting in a good spot. A second Dart Post costs the same 100 but starts from a worse position, because you already used the best one. Expand only when you need coverage somewhere new, or a damage type you do not have.

3. Wave 9 is a wall, and it is meant to be

Mylar Balloons arrive on wave 9 with a reflective film that halves blunt damage. If your board is all Dart Posts and Tack Rings, your damage silently drops by half and four balloons walk straight past you. The fix is one Pin Cannon — its pins ignore the film completely — or a Sun Lens, which burns through it. Bank coins during wave 8 so you can afford the answer the moment you need it.

4. Read the wind before it arrives

The wind changes every three waves and the next phase is always shown in advance. A tailwind adds up to a quarter of a balloon's speed, which means your towers get fewer shots per balloon — a defence that was comfortable on wave 15 can leak badly on wave 16 without a single new enemy type appearing. When you see a strong tailwind coming, either add damage or add a Frost Fan.

5. Frost Fan is a damage tower in disguise

It deals zero damage, so most players never build it. What it actually does is generate local headwind, which cancels a tailwind phase inside its radius and holds balloons in your kill zone longer. Every other tower on the board gets more shots off. At level 3 it also makes chilled balloons take 15% more damage from everything else.

6. Weather Balloons ignore your slows

From wave 13 onward, Weather Balloons resist 75% of any slow effect. If your whole late-game plan was to freeze everything in a corner and grind it down, this is where it stops working. Weather Balloons have to be answered with raw damage — a Pin Cannon at level 3, or a Sun Lens stacking burn.

7. Save Static Coil for the crowds, not the tanks

Static Coil chains to several balloons at once, which is devastating against the packs of twenty-five rubber balloons that show up in the mid game and nearly useless against a single Zeppelin, which resists shock damage. Build it when the wave counts are high, not when the health bars are.

8. Sun Lens wants the long straight

It has the longest range in the game and that range grows with wind strength, in either direction. Put it where it can see the most path at once — the final straight before the exit — and it will be hitting balloons that no other tower can reach.

Frequently asked questions

Is Balloon Tower Defense free to play?

Yes. The whole game is free in your browser. There is no download, no installer, no account, and nothing to buy. Your progress and best wave are stored locally in your own browser.

Do I need to sign up or install anything?

No. Open the page, press Play, and you are placing your first tower within a few seconds. Nothing is installed and no email is asked for.

Can I play Balloon Tower Defense on a phone?

Yes. The game is designed for touch first, not adapted to it afterwards. You drag towers into place with your finger, every control meets the 44-pixel minimum touch target, and it plays in portrait without forcing you to rotate.

How many waves are there?

Twenty waves on Meadow Run. A Zeppelin arrives on wave 10 and two more on wave 20. Clearing wave 20 unlocks Endless Mode, which loops the late waves with compounding health and speed.

What is the best tower to start with?

A Dart Post on the first bend. It is the cheapest tower at 100 coins, and a bend keeps balloons inside its range roughly twice as long as a straight section does. Upgrade that first post to level 2 before you build a second tower — the upgrade is cheaper than a new tower and usually adds more damage.

Why do my darts barely hurt the silver balloons?

Those are Mylar Balloons, and their reflective film halves blunt damage. Darts and tacks are blunt. You need pierce or burn: a Pin Cannon punches straight through the film, and a Sun Lens melts it. Wave 9 is the first wave that requires one of them, which is why most first runs end somewhere between wave 9 and wave 12.

How does the wind work?

Each map has a wind that changes every three waves, and the next phase is always previewed before it arrives. A tailwind speeds balloons up by as much as 25 percent; a headwind slows them down. Bigger balloons catch more wind, so a Zeppelin is affected far more than a rubber balloon. A Frost Fan creates local headwind, which is how you cancel a bad phase, and a Sun Lens reaches further the stronger the wind blows in either direction.

Does my progress save?

Your best wave and unlocked modes are saved in your browser using local storage. Nothing is sent to a server and no account exists, so clearing your browser data will reset your record.

Is this the same game as other balloon tower defense games?

No. This is an original game, built from scratch. The towers, the balloon tiers, the maps and the wind system are our own designs. It is not affiliated with any other tower defense franchise and contains no third-party artwork, characters or trademarks.

Will it work on a school or office network?

It is a single small page served over HTTPS with no plugins, no Flash and no third-party game frames, so it loads anywhere a normal website loads. Whether a particular network allows it is up to that network, not to us.

About this game

Balloon Tower Defense is an original browser game. We built the engine, the towers, the balloon tiers and the wind system ourselves, and every name in it comes from something real: balloons are graded by their material, and towers are named after genuine ways of popping one — a dart, a tack, a pin, cold air, static electricity, focused sunlight. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or derived from any other tower defense franchise, and it contains no third-party characters, artwork or trademarks.

It runs entirely in your browser. There is no download, no installer, no account and no payment. If you have a few minutes and a path that needs defending, that is all you need.
